Consume All Media! The Vigilante: "Chapter Nine: The Fatal Flood"

Joe Heath is a big fan of comic books and watching things in order. So they made this spreadsheet containing every serial, short, film, television episode, commercial, motion comic, and web series based on a comic book. Now they're watching them all. Previously, Joe watched the eighth chapter of The Vigilante. This time, they vigilantly continue with the ninth.

The Vigilante: “Chapter Nine: The Fatal Flood” - 19:00

The Vigilante jumps out of the window before the building explodes.

Stuff drives by and picks up The Vigilante. They see that the henchman is headed to Hidden Valley with the horse. Since they know where he’s going, they decide to stop for a moment so Greg can change back into his civilian clothes.

They finally get to Hidden Valley and the place looks deserted. Maybe you could catch people if you’d stop changing clothes every five minutes?

Greg meets the ranch owner, Waldron (Bud Osborne) and says he’s scouting locations for his newest film. Waldron politely says to get the hell off his lawn.

Actor Highlights

Bud Osborne (1884-1964)

Other comic book media credits: Brown in Batman (1943).

Due to his western aesthetic, Waldron is one of the more recognizable henchmen in this serial.

Stuff spots the henchman that stole the horse, but doesn't see the horse itself.

Later, after changing his clothes again, The Vigilante returns and finds the horse. He gets into a fight and leaves when they start shooting. He does not rescue the horse and the henchmen empty out the horseshoes. Your clothes did not help you, Greg.

Greg joins Pierce and Betty for dinner where they discuss the Vigilante. Nothing really happens in this scene, but Greg and Betty are just so damn charming. I love them.

Also, Betty sings a song.

She’s really good at it!

I might have been distracted by how nothing much was happening, but the plot starts to pick up here and I had a bit of a hard time following it. I rewatched it and I’m still not entirely sure what’s going on, but here’s the best I can figure.

X1 thinks someone is helping the Prince, so he tells a henchman to disguise himself as the Prince and ride the stolen horse to Pierce’s stable to see if anyone approaches him.

Some of the henchmen are getting tired of X1 getting all the goods while they do all the work and they complain about this to Silver (Jack Ingram). Silver goes by the codename X2 and is the head waiter at Pierce’s Cafe.

Actor Highlights

Jack Ingram (1902-1969)

Other comic book media: Henchman Klein in Batman (1943), Lieutenant Riley in Hop Harrigan (1946), Anton in Superman (1948), Cameron in Congo Bill (1948), & Foster in Atom Man vs. Superman (1950)

Silver tells the complaining henchmen that Prince Hamil is potentially involved in the outfit and pushing them out. So they go to take care of the Prince who should be riding into Pierce’s ranch soon.

Pierce also talks to Silver about some confusion with the pearls and leaves to go check it out.

Everyone converges on Pierce’s ranch. One henchman shoots the fake Prince. Another henchman attacks the real Prince. Greg and Stuff get knocked out and dumped in a river.

I have no idea what’s happening.

Should you watch it, though? I’m either stupid or this was intentionally confusing. But there’s some charming dinner conversations and another song!
