Consume All Media! Batman: "Chapter Five: The Living Corpse"

Joe Heath is a big fan of comic books and watching things in order. So they made this spreadsheet containing every serial, short, film, television episode, commercial, motion comic, and web series based on a comic book. Now they're watching them all. Previously, Joe watched the fourth chapter of Batman. This time, they continue with the fifth.

Release date: August 13th, 1943

Batman rolled out of the car before it went off the cliff. The three men inside die. Not counting this towards a kill count as Batman didn’t intend this and seems regretful that it happened. Batman doesn’t kill people! He just doesn’t!

Later, a coffin is delivered to Daka. Inside is a Japanese man who is mostly dead. He is reanimated and gives Daka a message. Then he dies. I guess this justifies the chapter’s title.

The information the Living Corpse provided leads Daka to want to steal a plane now.

Meanwhile, Bruce gets a secret message from the government. He shows Dick how to read it in an excruciatingly long scene where he dips the letter in some sort of science liquid. The letter tips Bruce off about the plane Daka wants to steal.

Daka lures two mechanics into his lair and turns them into zombies. There is a weirdly meta scene where the mechanics think Daka is part of the carnival ride. One of them says “The accent is off, but the makeup is perfect!” Well, he’s half-right.

The mechanics hijack a plane, not realizing that Batman is already on it. He gets into a fight with them and they barely notice when the plane gets shot down and crashes.

Should you watch it, though? This chapter had less life than the living corpse. Overly complicated but also boring!

Tune in next time for Batman: "Chapter Six: Poison Peril" (Available on Archive.)
