Consume All Media! Spy Smasher "Chapter Nine: Highway Racketeers"

Joe Heath is a big fan of comic books and watching things in order. So they made this spreadsheet containing every serial, short, film, television episode, commercial, motion comic, and web series based on a comic book. Now they're watching them all. Previously, Joe watched the eighth chapter of smashing spies. This time, they continue with the ninth chapter.

Spy Smasher jumped out of the boat before it exploded. Shocker.

The Mask’s new new plan is to steal some gold. And wouldn’t you know it? Jack is a ride-along in the truck delivering the gold.

The Mask’s men jump off a bridge onto the truck and gas Jack and the driver. There’s a brief fight and Jack gets away. After a lengthy chase, the Mask’s men think they’ve shot Jack (they haven’t) and decide to leave with the gold. Jack shoots the gas tank on the truck as it leaves.

Spy Smasher drives by and picks up Jack on his motorcycle. They follow the trail of gas to a secret road hidden by a Dick Tracy billboard.

Dick Tracy vs. Crime Inc. was another Republic serial released the year prior. (Dick Tracy was based on a comic strip and not a comic book; a distinction which has saved me from having to watch thousands more of these things.)

They get into a shootout, followed by a chase. Eventually, Spy Smasher jumps on top of The Mask’s men’s car and gets into a fistfight. The driver jumps out before the car plummets off a bridge with Spy Smasher still atop it.

Should you watch it, though? It’s interesting to me how most of the episode is focused more on Jack instead of Spy Smasher. It’s nice to see Jack get in on the action a little bit more than usual. Even though, you know… it’s the same actor.
